GROWING TRUFFLES
Growing Truffles
Serious interest for truffle cultivation started in Finland about 2006. After visiting both natural truffle grounds and established orchards and doing research and inspired by the early successes on the island of Gotland, Sweden we established Oy Truffle-Pro Ab in 2009, with the mission to promote the establishment of truffle orchards in the countries surrounding the Baltic Sea. Truffle -Pro was merged into Baltic Truffle in 2019.
Today more than 20 orchards (in total approx. 14.000 trees) have been planted in Finland (including the Alandia Islands), Sweden and Estonia advised by or in cooperation with Baltic Truffle. The host trees used are English Oak (Quercus robur) and Hazel (Corylus avellana) all with seeds of local origin. The inoculation material (Tuber aestivum/uncinatum) has primarily come from Gotland. The first trees were planted in 2010, with new orchards being established every year since then. Most of the orchards have been well-kept and last autumn 2020 the first truffles could be harvested from four different orchards in Finland.
We are constantly in cooperation with the leading experts in the world in the process of developing new practices and methods for boosting and monitoring the cultivation of various truffle species.
